Beech Springs (aka Poplar Tent)

Directions


Concord, NC - From Charlotte take I-85 North. Take the Poplar Tent Rd. exit 52. Take a left onto Poplar Tent Road. Take the first right onto Goodman after the I-85 overpass. Drive about a mile & park on the left

Description

3.7 mi. loop without the options. If all options are taken, the trail length can be increased to around 8-10 miles. Follow the red arrows with the blue dots for the main trial w/o options. The red arrows are for optional trails. This trail is very rooty and does have a steep downhill known as the Devil's Drop that is an option. There is a large gravity cavity that has multiple approaches. There are a few additional technical spots such as a very large rock with smaller rocks at the base as well as a small rock garden. It is a fun fast trail if you don't mind all the roots.

Directions

Waxhaw, NC - From Charlotte, take Providence road (Hwy. 16) south, where you will take a left in downtown (heh) Waxhaw. The road will fork and you will want to stay right. Then follow the Cane Creek sign on the right.

US National Whitewater Center (aka Catawba Riverfront Park)

Directions

Charlotte, NC - From Charlotte take I-85 South to Sam Wilson Road Exit 29. Exit to right. Take 1st left onto Performance Road. Follow Performance Road to the end and turn right on Moores Chapel Road. Take second left onto Hawfield Road. The trailhead is in the southeastern corner of the parking lot.

Approximately 5-6 miles on the southern end of the park w/o options and 9 miles with all optional trails included.

Description

Great trail with some killer uphills. However, new construction has made it possible to bypass the hills. The trail follows the riverfront in various place and has an occasional tricky turn, one known as the "carpet". This trail is one that kicks your butt regardless how many times you ride it. There is a fun downhill race course out in the open field that has large rolling mounds and is dual track.

Colonel Francis Beatty Park

Directions

Charlotte, NC - From I-485: Take the Providence Road exit, turn left back towards town. Turn right at the second light onto McKee Road. Follow McKee Road. (stay to the left at the fork at the Fire Station) approximately 4 miles until you come to the light at Weddington Rd. Turn right and the Park is 3/4 of a mile on your right.

From the Arboretum: Providence Rd. (Hwy 16) out of town approximately miles from the Arboretum at Hwy. 51. Turn left onto McKee Rd. Follow McKee Road. (stay to the left at the fork at the Fire Station) approximately 4 miles until you come to the light at Weddington Rd. Turn right and the Park is 3/4 of a mile on your right.

Great for beginners or for those looking for a fast ride. Not real technical but does have a few little tricky areas that are more like a complicated dip.

Finch Park

Directions

Lexington, NC - From Charlotte travel I-85 North: Take Exit 94 off of I-85 and go toward town on Old Hwy. 64 which becomes Raleigh Rd. Go about 6 tenths of a mile, then turn left onto Paul Beck Rd. The entrance to the park is the first driveway to the right.

From Winston-Salem or anywhere north of Lexington on Hwy. 52: From North Main street in Lexington, turn onto east 5th street. The street will change into Raleigh road after the Davidson Plaza (Burger King, Blockbuster, K-Mart) you will stay on Raleigh rd. past the Correctional Center and over a small bridge. Finch Park is on your right, but the entrance to the park is off the next road on your right at the top of the hill (Paul Beck Rd.)

Description

The trail is not well marked, but there are a couple of laminated signs stapled to trees saying "this way". There are small bridges at creek crossings and one place where the trail zig-zags back and forth across a dry creek bed. You can pick up a lot of speed here and get some air time popping up on the other side! There are also a few very steep ravines to brave, but they have alternate bypass paths for those who don't care for that kind of thing. The trail's short enough that you can ride it two or three times and enjoy the fun spots again!

Fisher Farm Park

Directions

Davidson, NC - I-77 N to exit 30/Davidson. Turn right at exit. Go to end of road and turn right at Main St. Turn left at next light (Davidson/Concord Rd.) Follow until you get to Grey Rd. and turn left. Follow Grey Rd. until it runs into Shearers Rd. (stay straight). Park is about 1.5 miles on right. Turn at Park sign and follow gravel driveway past barns and park on the right in the field. Look for the sign on your left.

Trail with diverse terrain to appeal to all skill levels. Consists of a main beginner loop, two intermediate loops and one advanced loop.

George Poston Park

Lowell, NC - From Charlotte take I-85 South to McAdenville Rd. Exit 23. Turn right at light onto McAdenville Rd. Turn right at next light onto Main St. Follow for about 2 miles to entrance on left. You will pass the trail head on your way to the parking lot.

Harrisburg Short Track

Directions

Harrisburg, NC - From the University: Hwy 49 North to Harrisburg (Exit 42 on I-85 North; Exit 33 on I-485). In Harrisburg at the intersection of Rt. 49 and Morehead (to the left) and Sims Blvd. (to the right) turn RIGHT onto Sims Blvd. Landmarks: cemetery and Circle K on the left, Wachovia branch on the right. Take Sims Blvd. two blocks and turn left into the Harrisburg Town Park. Follow the park road to its end at the parking lot in front of the picnic shelter. There is a new weather proof sign up the hill just beyond the volleyball pit to the left of the picnic shelter. The trail begins right behind the sign.

From Concord: the Wachovia branch will be on your left, turn LEFT onto Sims Blvd. Follow directions above.

From Charlotte via Robinson Church Road: turn LEFT onto Oakley, which is the street just before you get to Rt. 49. Follow Oakley to its end at Sims Blvd. (about 2 blocks). Turn LEFT onto Sims Blvd. and follow the directions above.

From Charlotte via Morehead: cross Rt. 49 and go straight ahead. Morehead turns into Sims Blvd. Follow directions above.

Description

The Harrisburg Trail is a "short track" open to all skill levels with short track (dirt criterion) racing in mind. The trail starts at the top of the hill to the left of the picnic shelter (standing in the parking lot, facing the shelter). You can see the trail bulletin board from the parking lot. The trail entrance is just beyond it. The trail can be divided into 4 sections (for the purpose of referring to its parts). Section one begins at the top of the hill, includes 4 berms and exits on to the park service road. From there you ride up the service road about 50+ feet to the beginning of section 2, which heads off into the woods down to the left. This is the "downhill" section, and includes 2 berms and a culvert crossing. This section exits into a small grassy field. Travel straight into the field 100-150 ft and enter section 3 into the woods to the right. This begins the second half of the trail and is uphill until you begin your next lap. Section 3 exits across the park walking trail. You travel straight ahead into section 4. Section 4 exits onto the park walking trail. Go to the right and follow the park walking trail up past the shelter. As the walking trail bears around to the left at the top of the hill you will see the trail bulletin board and the beginning of the trail.

Horizon Park

Directions

Winston-Salem, NC - From I-40 take 52 north to highway 8 Turn left at light (north) maybe 5 miles there is a sign on right that says Horizon park, turn there go maybe 1 mile the park is on both sides of the road, but the trail is on left.

Follow the gravel path down to the woods, The trail is VERY well marked, turns, drops, shortcuts, etc. Nothing real technical except one maybe 6 foot gully, some short really steep climbs and a few logs. Good cardio workout. One long climb, some fast places and the usual roots. Very well marked and clean.

Lake Norman State Park/Itusi Trail

Directions

Troutman, NC - Take I-77N to exit 42, and turn left onto Hwy 21 (west?), and follow the Brown signs to LNSP (approx 7 miles)

Description

The ride is approximately 4.2 miles in length at this time, and is a rolling, Tsali-esque type of ride. The flow is unbelievable, and the future expansion (4 - 6 miles) starts this weekend (9/27 - 9/28)...

North Mecklenburg Park

Directions

Huntersville, NC - Take I-77 North to Exit 25 (Hwy 73) Turn right off the ramp. Take 73 to the intersection at Hwy 115. Turn right and the Park is on your right.

Tight single track. Watch out for oncoming riders, this trail is bi-directional. Not very technical, but fast and fun to ride.

Owl's Roost

Directions

Greensboro, NC - I-85 north to I-40 east. I-40 east to 220. Follow 220 to Bur-Mil Park to find the trailhead.

Pee Wee's Mountain Bike Park

Directions

Lincolnton, NC - From Charlotte, take I-85 south past Gastonia to Hwy 321 North. Take Hwy 321 North to the Lincolnton Hwy 27 exit. (about 10-12 miles) Take a right at the end of the exit ramp onto Hwy 27 east. Go approximately 1 mile to a stoplight at Hwy 27 and Hwy 150. Take a left onto Hwy 150 and proceed for 6 miles. Cross over the South Fork river and as you come up the hill look on the left for Riverview Church Road. Take that left and Pee Wee's is on the right about 1/4 of a mile. From Huntersville area: Take Hwy 73 (Sam Furr road)southwest towards Lincolnton and stay there until you dead end into Hwy 27. Take a right onto Hwy 27 and go approximately 7 miles to a stoplight at Hwy 27 and Hwy 150. Take a left onto Hwy 150 and proceed for 6 miles. Cross over the South Fork river and as you come up the hill look on the left for Riverview Church Road. Take that left and Pee Wee's is on the right about 1/4 of a mile.

Pisgah National Forest

Brevard/Asheville, NC - Two main trail areas:1) Interstate 26 to Exit 9, follow Highway 280 South to Mills River, follow signs to North Mills River Rec. area. 2) I-26 to Exit 9, follow Highway 280 South to Pisgah Forest intersection, right onto NC 276 west, go 2 miles to Pisgah Nat. Forest Ranger station and buy book "Off the Beaten Track: Pisgah District" for trail info. Approx. 4 hours north of Atlanta, 3 hours west of Charlotte, and 30 minutes South of Asheville NC.

Renaissance Park

Directions

Charlotte, NC - Take I-77 to Tyvola Road. Go west on Tyvola, pass the signs for Renaissance Tennis fields to the Renaissance Athletic fields.

Description

Renaissance has about 6 miles of tight twisty single track. The trails are a bit hard to find, around the softball field, you need to ride around the back parking lot to see them. The tennis court trail starts to the right of the gravel road at the beginning of the parking lot…..you will see a dirt path that indicates the start of the trail.

Sherman Branch

Directions

Charlotte, NC - From Pineville: I-485 (Outer Loop) to Albermarle Rd. exit. Turn left towards Albermarle, take fist left on to Rocky River Church Rd., go about 1 mile, turn left into field at mailboxes after you pass Camp Stewart Rd.

From Harrisburg or I-85: I-485 (Inner Loop) to Harrisburg Rd., Exit 39. Turn right onto Harrisburg Rd., go about 1 mile to Camp Stewart Rd. and turn Left, follow until road dead ends into Rocky River Church Rd., turn left, go 200 yds, turn left into field.

All loops are open. Many of the trails are still new, some sections may be more packed in than others. Night Riding is not allowed. Gates are LOCKED at sunset.

Signal Hill

Directions

Statesville, NC - Heading North on I-77 out of Charlotte take exit 50 and turn East. Go .03 miles and turn left on Signal Hill Road. The trail head will be about .05 miles on the right and is marked by a Statesville Park and Recreation sign.

A lot of quick and moderately hilly single track. What the trail lacks in technical aspects is more than made up for in sheer fun!

South Mountains State Park

Directions

Shelby, NC - From Charlotte, Take 85 South to Hwy 74 - Kings Mountain exit On Hwy 74, just past Shelby, take a right on to 226. Then just follow the brown signs for South Mountain State Park.

Description

technical loop with HUGE climbs and blistering fast downhills. You will want to bring a dual suspension if possible. South Mountain is not a trail for the novice.

Supertree Loop

Directions

Albermarle, NC - Take Hwy 24/27, about 10 miles east of Albemarle, NC.

When ridden clockwise, this trail consists of fire roads and is filled with quick, swooping ups and downs, washouts, fast turns, and several excellent jumps.

Tanglewood Park

Directions

Winston-Salem, NC - Get on I-40 West from Winston-Salem and take exit #182 Tanglewood/Bermuda run. Turn left and Go about 0.25 miles and turn right at the stoplight (onto NC 158). Go past the park entrance and park in the gravel lot on the left just before the bridge. Trail starts on the other side of the gate on the left side of the gravel road

Description

This trail is awesome. It is very tight singletrack (particularly the first section) and very fast. The trail is pretty smooth for the most part and becomes fairly technical in the far loop. The far loop is on the other side of the main road into the park. This loop is about 4 miles long and has a bit more elevation change than the other loop. Ride on the doubletrack between the two loops and look out for horse poop. A great trail with lots to explore.

Tsali

Directions

Almond, NC - From Charlotte, Take 85 south to Hwy 74 Kings Mountain exit. From Hwy 74W, follow the signs to I-26W, and from I-26W, get on I-40W. From I-40W, you will jump back on to Hwy 74W. You will stay on Hwy 74W for quite a while before you come to 28N just past Bryson City. 28N joins 74W for a small stretch, and then splits off to the right. Tsali is just a few miles up 28N on the right. The sign is very small and on the left side of the road. Once you pass Turkey Creek Campground, you will go approx 4-5 miles and you will see the small green sign for Tsali Rec Area….turn right onto the gravel road and it will take you to the parking lot, lake or campground.

Mouse Branch is approx 10 miles, Thompson is 7 miles, Right and Left loops are roughly 11 miles each.

Description

Some say Tsali is the best riding east of the Mississippi, and it would be hard to argue. There are 4 loops, with nearly 40 miles of trails. 2 loops will be open to mountain biking each day, alternating with horseback riders, so plan a trip for at least 2 days and ride all the trails.

Cost is 2.00 per day. 2 trails alternate each day between bikers and equestrians, so check the schedule board to make sure you are riding the appropriate trails for that day.
